Cusco to Host Latin American Conference
Peru has taken another step towards becoming a regional leader in the meetings tourism industry. Cusco has been chosen to host the 15th Conference of the Latin American Association for the Development of Agricultural Insurance (ALASA) in 2018. This bid was submitted by the representatives of the company La Positiva Seguros y Reaseguros in the city of Punta del Este, Uruguay.
“To position Peru as a great destination for meetings tourism, our strategy has to include cooperation with the private sector. This is an example of this cooperation. We work to prepare bids for meetings in collaboration with trade unions, professional associations, universities, chambers of commerce and any public or private entity that is part of our community,” said the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR).
The Latin American Association for the Development of Agricultural Insurance (ALASA) was founded in February 1986. Its mission is to promote the development of the agricultural insurance and reinsurance industry as a means of protecting rural production in Latin America.
This conference is held every two years, and around 500 people are expected to congregate in Peru during the four-day event. Participants spend up to US $278,000. The association currently has 37 member organizations representing 15 countries. These organizations include La Positiva Seguros y Reaseguros, a member since 2015.
The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism recalled the 2015 ranking of the ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association), in which Peru climbed several spots and Lima and Arequipa appeared as its main cities: “As a country, we climbed to 39th place, with 84 events, moving up four places. In terms of cities, Lima went from 42nd on the list to 35th, Arequipa was ranked for the second straight year, and Cusco appeared on the list for the first time,” she concluded.
